Quote Of The Day - Anita Bryant

"I was before her time, but Sally Kern is here for such a time as this. I am grateful for her life and her friendship. Reading The Stoning of Sally Kern was at times like déjà vu, reminding me of my stand in Dade County in 1977. I can highly recommend this book to anyone who loves God, their family, and their country. It is a must-read for any believing woman or man who wants to make a difference in these perilous times. Those soldiers who have counted the cost of character assassination or endured other losses yet are willing to take a stand in truth and love for the glory of God, our children, and future generations will especially enjoy this inspiring book." - Anita Bryant, from a blurb on the cover of fellow homophobe Sally Kern's autobiography.

Sen. Ruben Diaz: Off The Rails

Despite the chair begging him to stay on topic (or on ANY topic) noted homophobe Sen. Ruben Diaz continues to ramble about nothing at all. Pity the legislators that have to work with this idiot every day.

Quote Of The Day - Sen. Ruben Diaz

"Everyone should realize that we’re not hiring Ricky Martin, Elton John or Rosie Perez to attract people to our event. There won’t be any paid superstars or celebrities to draw crowds. Whoever joins us will do so because they support traditional marriage. It’s important to know that whoever comes to this rally will be there because they support the growing movement in New York to protect marriage and to oppose proposals to redefine the definition of marriage to include homosexual marriage.

"I’d also like to clarify some loathsome accusations about our May 15th Rally coinciding with the New York AIDS Walk. Our Rally for Traditional Marriage will include thousands of New Yorkers who support AIDS programs and AIDS victims. No one has the right to accuse people who attend our rally of opposing AIDS victims or programs that help AIDS victims and their families. [snip] It has to be made clear that everyone who participates in the March Against AIDS is not necessarily in support of gay marriage. There is a huge difference between the March Against AIDS and our Rally. One has nothing to do with the other." - NY Sen. Ruben Diaz, feeling the heat for scheduling his massive hate rally against the AIDS Walk.

BRITAIN: Leading Christian Homophobe Stephen Green Unmasked As Wife Beater

Infamous anti-gay activist Stephen Green, who is well known as a British version of Peter LaBarbera, has been divorced by his wife. Because he'd been beating her with a piece of wood.
Caroline Green was often punished by her husband Stephen for failing to be a dutiful, compliant wife, but his final act of violence against her — the one that prompted her long-overdue decision to divorce him — was all the more chilling because it was coldly premeditated. Stephen Green wrote a list of his wife’s failings then described the weapon he would make to beat her with. ‘He told me he’d make a piece of wood into a sort of witch’s broom and hit me with it, which he did,’ she recalls, her voice tentative and quiet. ‘He hit me until I bled. I was terrified. I can still remember the pain. ‘Stephen listed my misdemeanours: I was disrespectful and disobedient; I wasn’t loving or submissive enough and I was undermining him. He also said I wasn’t giving him his conjugal rights. ‘He even framed our marriage vows — he always put particular emphasis on my promise to obey him — and hung them over our bed. He believed there was no such thing as marital rape and for years I’d been reluctant to have sex with him, but he said it was my duty and was angry if I refused him.
Green's wife also claims that their son had to be hospitalized after a beating from him.

RELATED: Last month the BBC raised the ire of LGBT activists when they interviewed Green as an "opposing voice" in a story about the birth of Elton John's son. Green has publicly endorsed Uganda's plan to execute homosexuals and his group, Christian Voice, has advocated for the overturn of Britain's laws against marital rape, saying that the Bible demands that all women must submit sexually to their husbands. Green has been the subject of numerous praising posts on Peter LaBarbera's site.

ALASKA: Rachel Maddow Corners Teabagger Loon Joe Miller On Gay Issues

And the answers were (murkily) what you'd expect. Miller says if elected to the Senate, he'd support an constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage. He is currently in a three-way tie with Democrat Sam McAdams and write-in GOP incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski.

Anti-Masturbation "Ex-Gay" Proponent And Teabagger Christine O'Donnell Wins GOP Senate Primary In Delaware

Teabagger Christine O'Donnell, who rilly rilly wants you to stop jerking off and being gay RIGHT NOW, squeaked by GOP favorite Mike Castle to win the Delaware primary today. This is actually good news for the Democrats, because as the Washington Post puts it, the GOP "is now writing off that seat." It also means we get seven more weeks of ridiculing Christine O'Donnell.

FLORIDA: Anti-Gay AG Bill McCollum LOSES Gubernatorial GOP Primary

Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum, the man who paid Dr. George "Rentboy" Rekers $130,000 in his bid to keep gay adoption illegal, has lost his GOP primary bid to become his state's next governor.
Former health-care executive Rick Scott clung to a narrow lead over Attorney General Bill McCollum on Tuesday night in the race for the Republican nomination for governor, as the most-expensive primary -- and one of the ugliest -- in Florida history staggered to a bitter conclusion. News services began calling the race for Scott shortly before 11 p.m. With 89 percent of precincts reporting, Scott had 47 percent of the vote to McCollum's 43 percent, a lead he had held most of the night. A third GOP candidate, Mike McCalister, garnered a respectable 10 percent for having spent only $8,000 -- a vote some attributed to voter disgust with the two leading candidates.
GOP winner Rick Scott is an teabagger anti-gay scumbag too, but we'll worry about him when he faces Democrat Alex Sink in November. For now, let's fucking celebrate the loss of Pig McCollum.

UPDATE: McCollum's concession speech continued his pandering to bigots: "My campaign for Governor may be over, but I remain committed to serving our state and serving out the rest of my term as Florida’s Attorney General. We will continue our fight against Obamacare, continue to support states’ rights and their authority to crack down on illegal immigration and fight for all Floridians."

NY Sen. Ruben Diaz: Same-Sex Marriage Will Bring The End Of The World

In this clip subtitled by Andres Duque at Blabbeando, evil homophobe NY Sen. Ruben Diaz appears on the NYC Spanish-language program Pura Politica to announce that same-sex marriage will bring about the End Times. The host of the show is quite adversarial to Diaz, fortunately, and calls him out rather strongly. Watch this. Last year Diaz appeared on the same program where he infamously proclaimed that as a Pentacostal preacher and a state Senator, "I am the church AND the state." Read Andres Duque's excellent dissection of this latest bit of arrogant assholery.

RELATED: Later in this same clip, Puerto Rican LGBT activist Pedro Julio Serrano rebuts Diaz' insanity. Keep an eye on Serrano, he's a real rising star in the movement.

The Gay Gestapo Is After Ruben Diaz

According to Rev. Jason McQuire of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedom, we're gay Nazis for opposing Sen. Ruben Diaz.
“To work for or against candidates that one feels strongly about is the democratic process in America, but this latest Nazi-esque attempt to dig up dirt on a public official’s private life crosses the line,” said McGuire. “Senator Diaz has been a lightning rod for same-sex marriage activists displeased with his strong defense of the family. Same-sex marriage activists are merely looking for ways to agitate the deep pockets of their base in an election year. They know that Sen. Diaz has been a strong advocate for the Hispanic and African-American communities. He is loved by the people of the Bronx, and has nothing to fear from the gay Gestapo.”
In 2008, Diaz bused 10,000 Hispanic evangelicals into NYC to beat their bibles and chant about homosexual damnation. And we're the Nazis? Incidentally, Diaz is now campaigning for the return of Hiram "Slasher" Monserrate. Because having a convicted spouse abuser in the state Senate is OK, as long as he hates queers.

What's In Ruben's Closet?

As part of their campaign to unseat arch homophobe NY Sen. Ruben Diaz, Fight Back NY has launched "What's In Ruben's Closet," a public call for dirt on our state's most evil politician.
Sen. Ruben Diaz has an annoying political survival instinct, but we want to set the record straight. We can help shift the playing field by showing that Diaz is not only bad for LGBT people – he’s bad for New York. With just 6 weeks to go before the primary, we need your help to fund a search into Ruben's closet. We'll post our research online, so his opponents, the media, and voters in his district will know the real Ruben Diaz.

Empire State Pride Agenda Calls For Ouster Of Arch Homophobe NY Sen. Ruben Diaz

Today the Empire State Pride Agenda endorsed 2010 NY Senate candidate Charlie Ramos in his bid to unseat the state's most vile homophobe, Sen. Ruben Diaz. Via press release:
As you probably know, Senator Diaz is our most vocal foe on marriage equality and transgender non-discrimination in the State Senate. He led rallies against marriage equality, spoke and voted against it on the Senate floor and is reported to have struck back room deals trying to prevent it from ever even coming to a vote. He led the debate against the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act in the Senate Judiciary Committee with unfounded and disproven myths. And he asserted a “one-man veto” to remove budgetary language that would have allowed legally married same-sex couples to file jointly on their New York State income tax returns.

In stark contrast, Charlie Ramos has committed to co-sponsoring marriage equality legislation, and has stated his full support for a statewide transgender non-discrimination law. He is also pro-choice and supports full access to reproductive health. Senator Diaz and all state legislators need to know that their attacks against the LGBT community will not go unanswered. New Yorkers understand fairness and equality, and want legislators who work to better the lives of their constituents and their families, not to find opportunities to discriminate against them. We want to send a loud and clear message that it is unacceptable that Senator Diaz chooses to thwart equality and justice for all New Yorkers.

Quote Of The Day - Mel Gibson

"You're an embarrassment to me. You look like a fucking pig in heat, and if you get raped by a pack of n***ers, it will be your fault." - Mel Gibson, in a voice mail recorded by the mother of his love child, Oksana Grigorieva.

During a 2006 DUI arrest, Gibson screamed at the arresting officers: "Fucking Jews! The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." In 1992 Gibson refused to apologize after making homophobic comments during an appearance on a Spanish talk show. A devout anti-abortion Catholic, Gibson has a total of eight children. He is also a notorious anti-feminist.

NEVADA: Teabagger Senate Candidate Sharron Angle Linked To Anti-Gay Group

Talking Points Memo has uncovered an anti-gay newspaper insert published in 1994 by the wingnut party that GOP Senate candidate Sharron Angle belonged to at the time.
The far-right third party that Nevada GOP Senate candidate Sharron Angle called home in the 1990s supported abolishing "the debt money system" and ran a vitriolic anti-gay insert in state newspapers that portrays LGBT people -- or, as Angle's party called them, "sodomites" -- as child-molesting, HIV-carrying, Hell-bound freaks, according to documents obtained by TPM. As we reported earlier this month, Angle was a member of Nevada's Independent American Party, a Christian conservative-cum-libertarian third party, for at least six years while she was getting her feet wet in politics in the 1990s. Independent American Party members told us that Angle switched to be a Republican in 1997 out of political expediency as she was preparing to make a run for state-level office.[snip]

In 1994, the party attracted considerable controversy by placing a 16-page advertising insert in Nevada newspapers promoting an amendment to the state constitution that would explicitly permit discrimination against LGBT people by businesses and government. Janine Hansen, the current executive director of the party and the editor of the '94 insert, told TPM earlier this month that "in general [Angle] agreed with our position on the issues." The ad insert, which approvingly cites an 1814 legal treatise titled "Consequences of Sodomy: Ruin of a Nation," is a digest of articles that refer to LGBT people alternately as "homosexuals," "sodomites," and "brazen perverts." The insert includes virtually every homophobic myth ever conceived. Sample headlines include: "Homosexual Curriculum In The First Grade" ... "Flawed Science Nurtures Genetic Origin For Homosexuality" ... "No Constitutional Right To Be A Sodomite."
The insert cited lies from discredited anti-gay "researcher" Dr. Paul Cameron and made the claim that HIV can survive in water.

Help Defeat New York's #1 Homophobe, State Sen. Ruben Diaz

Marriage Equality New York, who created the below clip, has posted a donation page for Charlie Ramos, the 2010 opponent of state Sen. Ruben Diaz, our state's most virulent and successful homophobe. Including in the below clip is footage of the 2008 anti-gay rally staged by Diaz, which brought 10,000 Hispanic evangelicals to Manhattan to scream anti-gay slogans and rail against same-sex marriage. Diaz, a Pentecostal preacher and a Democrat, has successfully thwarted numerous LGBT equality measures.

RADIO: Redneck Shock Jocks Go Off On Obama's Pride Month Proclamation

Pam Spaulding tips us:
The hosts of The Rick and Bubba Show, who on-air embody all of the embarrassing redneck stereotypes about southern white men, keep it real. We're talking about Rick Burgess and Bill "Bubba" Bussey. They broadcast on WZZK and XM Radio (Facebook page here) and call themselves the "The Two Sexiest Fat Men Alive." They went into an incredible homophobic rant about sin, adultery, fornication and everything but the kitchen sink over the fact that the President declared June Pride month.
A Facebook group calling for a boycott of the show's sponsors is here.

Rush Limbaugh Was Married By Arch Homophobe Pastor Ken Hutcherson

Yesterday it was learned that the wedding of Rush Limbaugh was officiated by rabid homophobe Pastor Ken Hutcherson. Among Hutcherson's many anti-gay activities: Leading a walkout of public schools in opposition to the Day Of Silence, attempting a Microsoft shareholder revolt to overturn the company's protections of gay employees, fighting the Matthew Shepard Act, supporting the "ex-gay movement, and campaigning against Washington state's Referendum 71. Hutcherson's 2004 Mayday For Marriage event brought 140,000 anti-gay evangelists to the nation's capital.

And Elton John performed at this wedding.

Outing Aftermath: Can We Forgive Our Enemies? Should We?

JMG reader Stephen wonders if the LGBT community shouldn't extend an olive branch and a rainbow flag to homophobes like Dr. George Rekers after they've been outed. He writes:
In light of this most recent outing of an anti-gay conservative, I've had some thought that I'd like to share with you. Last summer, I saw that great documentary, Outrage, that actively outed several politicians and, then, I agreed with its justification. The bigoted, but closeted gay, politicians harmed us, so we'll ruin them so they can't do it anymore. However, now, I think there's a big flaw in this: when we get one and ruin them, trash talk them, and alienate them from both us and their conservative friends, it speaks volumes to all the others. Every time we shame and express our outrage at these people, we could be inspiring fear and be pushing others further into the closet. In fact, when we assassinate the character of these people, we are doing just what they would do to us. I well understand the pain that people like Dr. Rekers have brought to our community, but vengeance only engenders more pain. Would we fuel such hatred with our own?

Ironically, I think we should take a leaf out of Jesus' (real) message: forgiveness. If we, as a community, welcomed these people and forgave their political trespasses against us, I think it will demonstrate a much better side of our community and actually help others follow in the path of coming out and repenting their old homophobic ways. Moreover, I think it would help our community demonstrate the irony that, in some ways, the "Christians" follow less of Jesus' teachings than us. I'm not saying we should excuse Dr. Rekers right now. From what I understand, he isn't as of yet knocking on our door asking for an accepting shoulder to cry on or for a rainbow flag to wave, but at the same time, I think we ought to make it clear that when he's ready, we'll have it for him.
One could make the case that an outed notorious homophobe could be a powerful ally. And certainly many survivors of the "ex-gay" movement are today advocating fiercely for LGBT causes. But could we forgive Dr. George Rekers (or someone like him) if he came to us tomorrow as a repentant homophobe and openly gay man? Should we?
