Anti-Gay NY Sen. Bill Stachowski Ousted In Democratic Primary

NY Sen. Bill Stachowski, one of the eight Democrats who thwarted marriage equality in New York, has been ousted by Tim Kennedy, who had the backing of Fight Back NY, the Human Rights Campaign, and Empire State Pride Agenda. Via press release from Fight Back NY:
You did it! Tonight you helped Fight Back New York take down anti-equality state senator Bill Stachowski, who was defeated by pro-equality candidate Tim Kennedy in the primary election. When we announced Stachowski as a target, you pulled through with donations and support to send him home for good. With Stachowski now out, and with former state senator Hiram Monserrate's defeat back in March, you're two for two. Over the course of the past several weeks, you've helped Fight Back New York air a hard-hitting radio ad and drop 147,000 pieces of mail to thousands of targeted voters in Stachowski's district. Thanks to you, Fight Back New York's tactics are proving to be highly successful - and people are noticing. You're sending tremors throughout Albany and legislative chambers throughout the country. You've helped take out two anti-gay Democrats and replace them with two pro-equality senators. Starting tomorrow, we shift our focus to the November, and anti-equality incumbents are paying very close attention to where we focus our energies next.

The Truth About NY Sen. Ruben Diaz

Fight Back New York writes us today to announce the launch of their new website, The Truth About Ruben Diaz, which exposes the New York Senate homophobe on many issues. The current top ten:
1. Ruben Diaz was investigated by the FBI
2. He was arrested for possession of heroin and marijuana
3. Ruben Diaz was only member of the New York Senate to vote against the ethics reform bill
4. He was the only Democrat in the New York Senate to vote to shut down the state government
5. Ruben Diaz refused to meet with his own constituents
6. He compared the use of stem cells for medical research to the Nazis using “the ashes of the Jews to make bars of soap.”
7. Ruben Diaz appropriated monies totaling $250,000 to an organization he founded, the Christian Community Benevolent Association
8. He also appropriated monies totaling $1,120,000 to the Hispanic Federation, of which the Christian Community Benevolent Association is a part (see #7)
9. Ruben Diaz defended former Sen. Hiram Monserrate, who was expelled from the Senate due to a conviction for misdemeanor assault against his girlfriend
10. Ruben Diaz and three other Democrats refused to support the Majority Leader, only to change their minds after he "offered them perks and committee chairmanships."

What's In Ruben's Closet?

As part of their campaign to unseat arch homophobe NY Sen. Ruben Diaz, Fight Back NY has launched "What's In Ruben's Closet," a public call for dirt on our state's most evil politician.
Sen. Ruben Diaz has an annoying political survival instinct, but we want to set the record straight. We can help shift the playing field by showing that Diaz is not only bad for LGBT people – he’s bad for New York. With just 6 weeks to go before the primary, we need your help to fund a search into Ruben's closet. We'll post our research online, so his opponents, the media, and voters in his district will know the real Ruben Diaz.

Fight Back NY Targets Buffalo Democrat Sen. Bill Stachowski For Defeat

Fight Back NY, the LGBT action PAC funded by Tim Gill, has announced their latest target.
Our next target: We're going after Buffalo Democrat Bill Stachowski.

Sen. Stachowski's voted against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) New Yorkers at every turn, whether it's nondiscrimination protections or marriage equality. Sen. Stachowski's been part of the dysfunctional New York State Senate for far too long -- 30 years. He does not represent fair-minded New Yorkers, and it's time we hold him accountable. Remember the hard-hitting tactics we used to help keep anti-equality Hiram Monserrate from office this spring? We'll be engaging in similar targeted outreach to voters in Sen. Stachowski's district. It's time our elected officials learned that they can't vote against equality and expect to be voted back into office. Every contribution goes directly toward communicating to voters in Stachowski's district. Help us turn up the volume on why Stachowski should be booted in the September primary. The more money you give, the louder you get to be!

HRC Launches New Group To Oust Anti-Marriage New York Politicians

The Human Rights Campaign has hired Bloomberg aide Brian Ellner to head a new group to take on New York's anti-marriage state politicians. The Campaign for New York Marriage will do similar work to that of the Tim Gill-funded Fight Back NY.

You may recall that Ellner was recently all but named to replace Alan Van Capelle as head of the Empire State Pride Agenda, but withdrew after some gay rights activists objected to his close affiliation with Bloomberg.
“I view this as an opportunity to build on solid work that has come before, and strengthen and expand the coalition that is necessary to secure marriage equality,” Mr. Ellner said in an interview. The new campaign will seek to re-elect state lawmakers who supported the bill on same-sex marriage last year, and to oust those who voted against it. After passing by a wide margin in the State Assembly, the bill was defeated by an eight-vote margin in the Senate despite a vigorous lobbying effort spearheaded by the Empire State Pride Agenda.

“New York is at a critical tipping point in securing marriage equality, and November’s elections hold the key,” said Joe Solmonese, the president of the Human Rights Campaign. The group would not say how much money it intended to spend to elect candidates in New York who advocate gay marriage, but those familiar with the plans said the group would seek to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars over the next few months. They are likely to focus on a few Democrats who voted against the bill on same-sex marriage last year, including Senators Joseph Addabbo and William Stachowski.
In 2005 Ellner ran unsuccessfully for Manhattan borough president as a Democrat.
