Another Icelandic Volcano

President Obama cut his visit to Ireland short to avoid the ash cloud from yet another Icelandic volcano.

Iceland's airports were closed Sunday and trans-Atlantic flights were being diverted around that country's airspace. Last year it was the Eyjafjallajokull volcano and now it is a volcano with another unpronounceable name, the Grimsvotn volcano, which is spewing ashes into the atmosphere. At this time the air travel disruption is only impacting flights over Iceland, but the disruption could expand at any time.

As wildfires continue to sweep across hundreds of thousands of acres, Texas Gov. Rick Perry has issued an official state proclamation urging residents to pray to God to send some rain.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, RICK PERRY, Governor of Texas, under the authority vested in me by the Constitution and Statutes of the State of Texas, do hereby proclaim the three-day period from Friday, April 22, 2011, to Sunday, April 24, 2011, as Days of Prayer for Rain in the State of Texas. I urge Texans of all faiths and traditions to offer prayers on that day for the healing of our land, the rebuilding of our communities and the restoration of our normal and robust way of life.

Perry's proclamation does not ask God what Texas did to piss Him off in the first place.

U.S. Warns Japan On Radiation

The chairman of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission gave a significantly bleaker appraisal of the threat posed by Japan’s nuclear crisis than the Japanese government, saying on Wednesday that the damage at one crippled reactor was much more serious than Japanese officials had acknowledged and advising to Americans to evacuate a wider area around the plant than the perimeter established by Japan. The announcement marked a new and ominous chapter in the five-day long effort by Japanese engineers to bring four side-by-side reactors under control after their cooling systems were knocked out by an earthquake and tsunami last Friday. But it also created a split between Washington and Tokyo, after American officials concluded that the Japanese warnings were insufficient, and that, deliberately or not, they had understated the potential threat of what is taking place inside the nuclear facility.

My interpretation of this is that while God did not want people to perish, He is going to use this to "pierce" the darkness surrounding the Japanese people if we will cry out to God for them in the midst of this crisis ... If we respond correctly, the darkness and the grip of idolatry of all forms that has blinded the eyes of so many in Japan will be broken off of them. The faithful believers in Jesus Christ will be strengthened as they are used for great harvest across Asia and the face of the earth.

Massive Quake Slams Japan

At a reported 8.9 magnitude, it appears to have been the worst quake in Japanese history. The live video of the resultant tsunami has been both riveting and horrifying.

The quake was originally reported at a magnitude of 7.9 but was later upgraded to 8.9. That makes it the fifth largest recorded world-wide since 1900, according to the U.S. Geological Service, larger than the 7.9-magnitude Great Kanto Earthquake that devastated Tokyo in 1923 or the 6.8 magnitude quake that hit Kobe in 1995. The quake caused mass panic around Tokyo, where workers evacuated their buildings and power was cut off at 4.1 million households in Tokyo and neighboring prefectures.

Hawaii Civil Defense has ordered the immediate evacuation of all coastal areas. Go to NOAA for the latest on tsunami warnings, which have been extended to much of the U.S. west coast.

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake centered near Christchurch rocked New Zealand today. The quake hit at 4:30am Saturday morning local time and initial press reports are light on details so far. Aftershocks are continuing. As is the case for breaking news these days, Twitter users are providing the most information. It appears that tsunami warnings have not been issued.

Volcano Hits NYC Economy

Iceland's volcano isn't just wreaking havoc on the European economy, NYC has taken an estimated hit of $250M so far.

City officials are bracing for the loss of $250 million in tourism-related revenue as the ash clouds prevented nearly 12,000 European travelers from visiting New York over the weekend. "The people we were expecting are not coming and not spending money at restaurants," said Marjan Inbar, a spokeswoman for the New York travel office NYC & Co. "They're not shopping, not going to attractions," Inbar added. The volcanic ash wafting over northern Europe is already costing the airline industry $200 million a day and devastating overseas tourist attractions. New York is about to feel that pain. "Until this ... goes back to normal we can lose a lot of money," Inbar said. International tourists make up only 20% of the visitors to New York, but account for 50% of tourism spending, city officials said.

Limbaugh: Obama Caused The Volcano

Yesterday Rush Limbaugh suggested that God is angry about Obama's health care reform bill and therefore smote the world with volcanic ash.

You know, a couple of days after the health care bill had been signed into law Obama ran around all over the country saying, “Hey, you know, I’m looking around. The earth hadn’t opened up. There’s no Armageddon out there. The birds are still chirping.” I think the earth has opened up. God may have replied. This volcano in Iceland has grounded more airplanes — airspace has more affected — than even after 9/11 because of this plume, because of this ash cloud over Northern and Western Europe. At the Paris airport they’re telling people to head to the train station to catch trains out of France, and when people get to the train station they’re telling people, “There aren’t any seats until at least April 22nd,” basically a week from now. It’s got everybody in a shutdown. Earth has opened up. I don’t know whether it’s a rebirth or Armageddon. Hopefully it’s a rebirth, God speaking.
