ONJ To Headline NYC Pride Concert

Olivia Newton-John will perform in concert on NYC's Governor's Island on the Saturday of Pride weekend.
Set off shore on Governor’s Island for an expected crowd of 4000, the event will bring Australia’s infamous beach stateside, complimented by Manhattan’s illuminated skyline as backdrop. Top notch billing will be paired with visuals worth marveling at: a stunning firework display over the East River, the largest outdoor video projection wall in New York’s history, massive sound and light installations, and over-the-top décor. All features of course, adhering to the event’s Australian theme.
Advance tickets at the link. I don't think this show has any official relationship with NYC Pride.

Tom Tom Club To Play Irving Plaza

Talking Heads offshoot Tom Tom Club will play NYC's Irving Plaza on January 12th. I'm rather excited about this as I've never seen them live. It's OK, I've overstood! Here's a great acoustic mini-concert the band did for NPR this fall.

Elton John To Headline AFER Fundraiser

Elton John in November 2008: "We're not married. Let's get that right. We have a civil partnership. What is wrong with Proposition 8 is that they went for marriage. Marriage is going to put a lot of people off, the word marriage. I don't want to be married. I'm very happy with a civil partnership."

Despite that position, Elton will be performing a charity concert for the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER), the group backing the repeal of Prop 8. Via press release:
Sir Elton John will perform a concert on Wednesday, January 19 at a private home in Beverly Hills to raise funds for the American Foundation for Equal Rights. The Foundation’s case, Perry v. Schwarzenegger, is the federal constitutional challenge against Prop. 8. The Foundation was victorious in federal district court earlier this year, and will argue before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on December 6. “We are deeply honored to have the support of Sir Elton John,” said Chad Griffin, Board President of the American Foundation for Equal Rights. “The American Foundation for Equal Rights stands for the enduring principle that all Americans are created equal, and believes that ending state-sanctioned discrimination is a critical step we must take toward ending the hate crimes and suicides that continue to claim the lives of young Americans.” The event will be held at the "Green Acres" estate of Ron Burkle.

November 8th In NYC: Fundraising Concert For The Ali Forney Center

Monday, November 8th in New York City, the Ali Forney Center will stage a fundraising concert featuring Alan Cumming, David Raleigh, Billy Porter, and dance music star Ari Gold.
It’s no secret. Our LGBT youth are suffering now more than ever before, as you may have seen in recent news. These teens need support, they need help, and most of all, they need friends. For these reasons, Alan Cumming, Ari Gold, Billy Porter and I have founded a benefit we are calling The Friends Project. It is my pleasure to invite you to a ONE NIGHT ONLY EVENT with me and my friends. Together, we will raise awareness of this grave issue, celebrate life and release the world premier of our new music video, “That’s What Friends Are For.” All proceeds will benefit the Ali Forney Center, an organization that works tirelessly to serve New York City’s homeless LGBT youth. The center sees vulnerable LGBT teens through that fragile transition between adolescence and adulthood. We are friends of the Ali Forney Center and we are friends to the city’s struggling LGBT teens.

Dawk Sawkasm In Thuh Claahsroom

Last night my pal Jerry treated me to Roger Waters' restaging of Pink Floyd's The Wall at Madison Square Garden, where 20,000 New Yorkers sang along to the title track in mock British accents. (Same thing when I saw Depeche Mode in Miami: The grawbing hanns, grawb all they conn.) The show was every bit the spectacle it's reputed to be: giant puppets, a massive collapsing wall, free-flying remote controlled inflatable pig, etc.

While I was never a Pink Floyd fan, much of the music felt vaguely familiar in that way that massive hit albums used to insinuate themselves into your subconscious whether you dug them or not. That probably doesn't happen anymore. My favorite moment was watching yuppies pump their fists from their $1000 seats to the anti-Big Brother message as they checked their nanny-cam live-streams from their smartphones. By the way, at 67 years old Roger Waters looked and sounded amazing.

Quote Of The Day - Chris Robinson

"As a band we've been trying to string together these moments, the kind of moments I've had as a music fan that have blown my mind. That's not happening when you're texting or checking your fucking fantasy league stats. I personally think you should be too high to operate a machine at our concerts." - Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson, whose band has joined a growing movement to ban the use of cell phones and digital cameras at their concerts.

Also onboard are Wilco, White Stripes, and Natalie Merchant, the last of whom recently dissed the army of raised cameras facing her, saying, "I'm right here. This is live. This is where the show is." About one-third of the audience at the Scissor Sisters concert I attended last month seemed to be recording the show for YouTube, making me wonder about the diminished enjoyment resulting from such a conscious removal of oneself from "the moment."

The Love Parade Is No More

Organizers of Germany's Love Parade techno dance party have announced that the 21 year-old annual event is permanently canceled "out of respect to those killed and injured" on Saturday. Nineteen attendees were killed and hundreds were injured during a mass panic in the sole entrance tunnel to the event. Fearing further chaos, police instructed the DJs to continue playing for several hours, since most of those already inside had no idea what had occurred. I'd always wanted to attend the Love Parade, having only gotten a small taste at San Francisco's version of the party in 2006. Below is the 2001 remix of Da Hool's 1997 classic, Meet Her At The Love Parade.
