Lady Gaga Sells 1.1M In First Week

The first week of sales for Lady Gaga's Born This Way are the highest for any release in the last six years.
Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" album debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 1,108,000 copies sold in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's only the 17th album to sell a million in a week since SoundScan began tracking sales data in 1991, and the highest sales week since 2005. "Born This Way" also marks Gaga's first No. 1 album -- "The Fame" debut peaked at No. 2, while "The Fame Monster" EP reached No. 5 and dance effort "The Remix" hit No. 6. "Born This Way's" bow reaps the largest sales week of any album since 50 Cent's "The Massacre" did 1,141,000 in its first week, in March of 2005. The last time we had a million-plus frame was when Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" premiered at No. 1 with 1,047,000 in November of 2010. The SoundScan-era record week is held by NSYNC's "No Strings Attached," when it debuted at No. 1 with 2,416,000 in 2000.

Quote Of The Day - Tim Winter

"I cannot imagine what would possibly lead the ABC television network to air a profanity-laced, S&M sex show on primetime broadcast television. The overtly sexualized performance by Rihanna and Britney Spears was no accident or mishap, but a deliberate effort to target teens with images and lyrics that that glamorize whips, chains and other sexual fetishes." - Parents Television Council head Tim Winter, who's really upset that Britney and Rihanna kissed during their performance on the Billboard Awards. Lesbianism, the OTHER sexual fetish!

Glee Cast Joins Pop Chart Royalty

In less than one year, the cast of Glee has scored 43 (mostly minor) hit singles on Billboard's Hot 100, placing them among the top ten most charting non-solo acts of all time. Here's the current ranking of group acts by number of charting Hot 100 singles: Beatles (71), Rolling Stones (57), Beach Boys (55), Temptations (53), Chicago (46), Miracles (46), Four Tops (45), Supremes (45), Bee Gees (43), Glee cast (43).

As a vivid example of the disposability of today's pop music, Billboard notes that the 43 Glee singles have only spent a combined 57 weeks on the chart, with only eight of the singles surviving longer than one week. By comparison, singles by the Beatles spent a combined 617 weeks on the Hot 100.
