INDONESIA: Islamic Extremists Protest Jakarta's Gay Film Festival
Waving stills from the movies, hundreds of Islamic extremists protested yesterday in Jakarta, Indonesia demanding the closure of a gay film festival. Via the Jakarta Post:Clad in white Muslim attire, the members of the hard-line group removed posters of the movies to be screened during the Q Film Festival, being held from Sept. 21 to Sept. 30 in a number of theaters and cultural centers. Salim Alatas, chairman of the Jakarta branch of the FPI, said organizers of the festival had 24 hours to stop the festival. “We want the festival to be stopped as it screens movies that promote homosexual relationships,” Salim was quoted as saying by tempointeraktif.com. Dozens of police flanked the FPI members to avoid any acts of violence. Earlier, the FPI members staged a rally at the Goethe Institute German cultural center, and the French Cultural Center, and planned to march to the Japan Foundation center in Central Jakarta to convey their objection to the festival. “We do not want this place to be set on fire because of moral decadence,” Salim said during the rally at the Goethe Institute on Jl. Sam Ratulangi in Menteng, as quoted by kompas.com.Festival organizers say they expected the protest and that the event will proceed as planned. According to the Guardian UK, the Islamic Defenders Front has previously "smashed bars, attacked transvestites and targeted other groups it considers blasphemous."

Matrix Directors Plan Gay Love Story
The quirky Wachowski siblings, whose Matrix trilogy earned bajillions, are planning to film a love story between a gay American soldier and an Iraqi man. Production Weekly took to Twitter to report that casting on the film has begun. There's not a wealth of information out there about CN9 -- in fact, all we really know for sure at this point is that it's going to be a "hard-R war picture about a homosexual American soldier who falls in love with an Iraqi." But, before you assume it's just Brokeback Mountain set in the Middle East, consider that CN9 could stand for the ninth cranial nerve (it does in medical terminology), which is the nerve responsible for receiving information from the tongue, middle ear, and tonsils according to website Playlist. When you do that, the site suggests that it doesn't seem like a stretch to picture the filmmaking duo once again venturing into the world of strange alternate realities and sci-fi.The movie will be set in the "near future" and work backwards through the war, according to the above-linked story.

At The Florent World Premiere
Thursday night Father Tony and I attended the world premiere of Florent: Queen Of The Meat Market, David Sigal's documentary of the of famed Meatpacking District restaurant, its flamboyant owner Florent Morellet, and the incredible scenes staged almost nightly over the 25 years that NYC's night creatures inhabited the place. On hand at the premiere was a who's who of Manhattan's downtown scene, including Michael Musto, Murray Hill, Penny Arcade, Edgar Rodriquez, Dirty Martini, Brian Griffin, Kenneth Walsh, Simon Doonan, and Jonathan Adler. One person I didn't expect to meet was openly gay DNC treasurer Andrew Tobias, who outed himself as a JMG reader.
The movie is a sort of tone poem to the now lost Meatpacking scene and the audience cheered every time a beloved Florent employee or patron appeared on the screen. But it's also a real history of NYC activism, AIDS, art, and nightlife. After the screening, everybody moved into a giant room next door where performance artists and Florent regulars Tigger, Penny Arcade, Murray Hill, and others did their thing on stage as we noshed, drank, and mingled far too late on a school night. I got to chat a chat times with director David Sigal (also a devout JMG reader!) and he seemed thrilled with his film's reception. Even if you've never lived in Manhattan, you should definitely find Florent when it appears at your local film festival.
RELATED: This week Gothamist posted a great interview with David Sigal and five years ago Towleroad published a lengthy profile on Florent. Father Tony's possibly NSFW slideshow from the premiere is here.

Swag Tuesday
Courtesy of the Karpel Group, today we have two great swag giveaways! First up is the Cinema Pride Collection, a ten disc DVD collection of classic gay movies, available today exclusively from Amazon. The very first gay-themed film DVD collection from a major motion picture studio, The Cinema Pride Collection debuts only at Amazon.com on June 8 from Twentieth Century Fox and MGM Home Entertainment. Distinctively packaged with vibrant artwork, the set includes ten movies spanning over 40 years and includes The Children’s Hour, La Cage Aux Folles, My Beautiful Laundrette, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert: The Extra Frills Edition, The Birdcage, Bent, The Object of My Affection , Boys Don’t Cry, Kissing Jessica Stein and Imagine Me & You. “The 10 films included in The Cinema Pride Collection reflect just how far the LGBT movement has evolved over the past four decades. These films offer viewers an unforgettable journey into our collective past” offers Jeremy Kinser of The Advocate. Filled with poignancy, humor and inspiring bravery, the acclaimed movies have paved the way for filmmaking that honors diversity and acceptance.
Also released today is Non-Stop, the new solo album from Erasure's out frontman Andy Bell. We have five copies of Non-Stop to swag you with. Connoisseurs of deluxe dance-pop, seductive electro anthems and gold-plated disco grooves - lend me your ears, Andy Bell releases a brand new album, Non-Stop. Non-Stop, co-produced and co-written by Andy Bell and Pascal Gabriel (S'Express, Ladyhawke, Debbie Harry, Kylie, Little Boots) is a lavish 10 track collection of exquisite dancefloor confessionals from one of the most acclaimed and beloved singers in British pop. Non-Stop features the forthcoming single Call On Me, and Honey If You Love Him, a duet with and written by Perry Farrell (of Jane's Addiction fame), a huge fan of Andy's voice who suggested the alliance. Although Andy's long-running partnership with Vince Clarke in Erasure (recipients of Best British Group at The Brit Awards) remains very much a going concern - since the release of 1986's debut, Wonderland. The singer's second solo album provides a liberating platform for his more clubby, nocturnal, disco-glam side. He has even purposely changed his vocal register and style for much of Non-Stop, putting clear blue water between his soulfully electronic solo voice and his gleaming, poppy Erasure work.Enter to win the Cinema Pride Collection or Andy Bell's Non-Stop by commenting on this post. Only enter once and please remember to leave your email address in the text of your comments. Entries close at midnight on Thursday, west coast time. Publicists: If you'd like to take part in Swag Tuesday on JMG, please email me.

TRAILER: Stonewall Uprising
Stonewall Uprising is making the festival rounds and will open early this summer around the nation. Schedule here. Synopsis:
"It was the Rosa Parks moment," says one man. June 28, 1969: NYC police raid a Greenwich Village Mafia-run gay bar, The Stonewall Inn. For the first time, patrons refuse to be led into paddy wagons, setting off a 3-day riot that launches the Gay Rights Movement. Told by Stonewall patrons, Village Voice reporters and the cop who led the raid, Stonewall Uprising compellingly recalls the bad old days when psychoanalysts equated homosexuality with mental illness and advised aversion therapy, and even lobotomies; public service announcements warned youngsters against predatory homosexuals; and police entrapment was rampant. A treasure-trove of archival footage gives life to this all-too-recent reality, a time when Mike Wallace announced on a 1966 CBS Reports: "The average homosexual, if there be such, is promiscuous. He is not interested in, nor capable of, a lasting relationship like that of a heterosexual marriage." At the height of this oppression, the cops raid Stonewall, triggering nights of pandemonium with tear gas, billy clubs and a small army of tactical police. The rest is history.
