Fox Rejects "John 3-16" Super Bowl Ad

World Net Daily is upset because Fox has rejected a Super Bowl ad promoting the scripture John 3:16, which became famous for being seen at major sporting events thanks to Rollen "Rainbow Man" Stewart (seen above). They quote the ad's maker:
"The rainbow man, the guy we always used to see standing in end zones after field goal and extra point attempts holding up his John 3:16 sign – now there is a message of real hope. That message is a part of the culture of football. You see it all the time. You've seen it on the eyeblack, you've seen it on tattoos, you've seen it, as I've mentioned, the rainbow man and many others.

"In the midst of the commercials on everything that's trivial," Taunton says, "wouldn't it be wonderful if after this year's Super Bowl, in addition to talking about the game, people were talking, not about beer or potato chip commercials, they were talking about the gospel? Well, that's what we want to see happen." After a few months of working on the commercial and raising funds for its broadcast, however, Fox sent what Taunton calls "a carefully worded document" explaining the network "would not air anything with religious doctrine."
Not incidentally, Rainbow Man is now presenting his "message of real hope" from prison, where he is serving three consecutive life sentences for kidnapping.

Frito-Lay: Those Aren't OUR Gay Ads

Frito-Lay wants you to know that they have nothing to do with all those gay-themed Doritos ads pretending to be Super Bowl contenders. GLAAD reports:
There has been tremendous confusion however, about what these ads actually are. Some say they could run during the Super Bowl – others say the ads were created by fans of Doritos, and will never air anywhere. So we reached out to Frito-Lay to find out what the truth is. According to Frito-Lay Director of Public Relations Chris Kuechenmeister, the latter is true. He said the pair of ads in question were two out of 5,600 that were submitted to the company for its “Crash the Super Bowl” contest. Furthermore, the YouTube page on which the ads appear is a fan-made page, and not the official page for the Crash the Super Bowl contest. Kuechenmeister said the ads in question were not among the finalists chosen by a panel of judges, and have no chance of airing during the Super Bowl or otherwise.
Here's another one of the not-ads.

Fox Rejects Anti-Obama Super Bowl Ad

Fox has rejected the below Super Bowl ad from the wingnut site Jesus Hates Obama, which sells t-shirts and bobblehead dolls with their message. The banning will doubtlessly send them more traffic than the ad ever would have. Also rejected is an ad from the heterosexual pro-adultery site, Ashley Madison.

Jeebus Tastes Like Doritos

Catholics and Freepers have launched a petition against this entry in a contest in which the winning ad will be aired during the Super Bowl. Currently, this clip leads in the voting. Wait until Bill Donohue sees it!

The $50,000 Cock Shot

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre has been fined $50,000 by the NFL for sending his cock shot to a female employee of the New York Jets, for whom Favre played at the time. Favre had faced a suspension by the league, a slight punishment considering he is expected to retire after this weekend. The fine is less than 1% of Favre's 2010 salary, but on a per-inch basis (NSFW), the fine, at least, is a whopper.

GERMANY: Top Footballer Mario Gomez Urges Gay Players To Come Out

Mario Gomez, one of Germany's most famous soccer stars, has urged gay players to come out, saying it would not only improve their game, it would better the sport.
Gomez, who has not said whether he is gay, told a German magazine that being honest about their sexuality would improve gay players' performance. "They would play as if they had been liberated," Gomez said. "Being gay should no longer be a taboo topic." The 25-year-old, who was voted German footballer of the year in 2006-7, added that there were plenty of role models in the rest of German society to give gay players the courage to come out. "We've got a gay vice-chancellor [Guido Westerwelle]; the Berlin mayor [Klaus Wowereit] is gay. So professional footballers should own up to their preference," he said. There are no openly gay players in Germany's Bundesliga, reflecting the situation across the football world, although it is estimated that about 10% of players are gay.
The German soccer federation has warned gay players not to come out, saying it would ruin their careers.

MISSISSIPPI: High School Football Player Kicked Off Team For Pink Cleats

Mississippi high school football player Coy Sheppard was kicked off his team last month when he showed up for practice wearing pink cleats. Just like NFL players were doing to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Apparently Sheppard's coach thought the pink cleats signified something else.
According to the Associated Press, WLBT.com and USA Today, among other outlets, Coach Chris Peterson kicked 17-year-old placekicker Coy Sheppard off the Mendenhall football team when Sheppard attempted to wear pink cleats in a practice following a game in October. During the prior game, coaches ridiculed the kicker for wearing the shoes, but he showed up for the team's Monday practice wearing the pink cleats regardless. Now the senior, who relied on academic credit from playing football to help fulfill graduation requirements, might not receive his diploma on time.
The pink cleats were a gift from Sheppard's grandmother, who is a breast cancer survivor. The kid is suing the school and says any judgment will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

UPDATE: JMG reader Mike tips us that the school has just relented and reinstated the student.

NYC Wins Super Bowl 2014

Yesterday NFL team owners voted to award the 2014 Super Bowl to NYC. It will be the first time the game will be played in a "cold weather" city with an open stadium, the brand new Meadowlands. Which is in New Jersey, of course.
The Super Bowl could bring in as much as $550 million to the region, according to some estimates. But these measures, sports and economic experts say, are an inexact and vary based on factors ranging from what teams are playing to the weather. That's not such a big deal in Miami or Los Angeles, but the average temperature for the Meadowlands area in February is somewhere between 24 to 40 degrees, with several inches of rain. And the game is usually at night, when temperatures drop. Did we mention there's no roof on the new $1.6 billion stadium? That may keep some fair-weather fans away and the die-hards too, if their flights are canceled due to snow.
New Jersey didn't pay for the new stadium, but it still has to finish paying about $120M for the old one, which was demolished last week.
