Jon Stewart: Stop Saying "Teabagger"

Jon Stewart says the word "teabagger" was funny "for maybe a day" and that the left should stop using it. Never!

WASHINGTON: Rally For Sanity Smashes All-Time Metro Saturday Ridership Record

Yesterday's Rally For Sanity broke Washington's all-time record for Metro ridership on a Saturday.
By preliminary estimates, Metro recorded 825,437 Metrorail trips on Saturday. Whether it served any of those riders very well is different question. The demand for public transit to attend the Rally To Restore Sanity and/or Fear -- hosted by Comedy Central duo Stewart and Colbert -- exceeded supply. Metro customers suffered long waits at various Metro stations throughout the city. Several even suffered injuries. Nevertheless, the new record fairly shattered the old record, set on June 8, 1991, when Washington played host to a victory celebration for U.S. troops who served in the First Gulf War. That day Metro recorded 786,358 trips. A 1997 Promise Keepers rally in the District has the third-place record, with 735,909 trips.
Of course, we'll never know how many more people were turned away from using the subway (as was my group) because the cops were freaking out about how crowded the platforms were. We ended up walking the hour or so from our hotel to the Mall and it was amazing to look down the side streets and see tens of thousands of people streaming up from all directions.

RELATED: Despite the ridership count and all the other attendance reports, the Freepers are, of course, declaring that the lamestream media are conspiring to cook the head count so that Glenn Beck's rally looks smaller in comparison.

RECAP: Rally For Sanity

Today's Rally For Sanity in DC was an astounding success by most measures, except, ahem, for those of us who only arrived two hours early and still couldn't get within miles of the stage or Jumbotrons. In fact, most of the time we were too far away to even hear the public address system. On top of that, the Metro was insanely overloaded, prompting DC police to close the entrance to some stations for safety reasons. Hello, walking for miles. I'll recap the day further in a later post, meanwhile below is a slideshow, a brief clip from Stephen Colbert's entrance, and Jon Stewart's main speech. Full-screen versions of the below photos can be found here.

WASHINGTON: 8PM Post-Rally JMG Reader Meet-Up At Green Lantern Bar

Based on reader responses and the advice of JMG-ers in DC, we've decided to hold next Saturday's DC reader meet-up at the Green Lantern, which is down an alley (Halloween! Spooky!) just off Thomas Circle near 1111 14th Street. (That's the address the bar manager suggested is easiest to find from the street.) The Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert rally runs noon to 3pm, so you'll have to time to rest up and grab dinner before we get to the bar at 8pm.

Green Lantern's costume contest is later that night, but they're bringing the staff on early in case there's a lot of us. Previous JMG meet-ups in NYC, Las Vegas, Montreal and San Francisco have ranged from 25-100 or so folks, but I have no idea how many of y'all are coming in for the rally. Rather than do a Facebook page on this, just hit the comments if you think you'll drop by. As always, we look forward to putting faces to screen names! UNRELATED: I've been advised to note that next Saturday is also the 4th annual Power Bottom Appreciation Day, which is the creation of DC-based JMG reader Durban Bud. Wait, maybe that's not unrelated. We'll decide when we meet you.

Who's Going To DC Next Weekend?

I'll be in DC next weekend for the Rally To Restore Sanity. Who else here is going? The rally runs from noon until 3pm on Saturday and I'm thinking we might do a JMG reader meet-up that evening. I've put a couple of feelers out to find us a venue and am open to your suggestions. We had a ton of great folks at the meet-up in SF last week.

Jon Stewart & Stephen Colbert Plan "Dueling" Rallies For Washington DC

Vanity Fair has the deets:
On last night’s Daily Show and Colbert Report hosts Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, respectively, announced that they would be holding concurrent rallies on the Mall, in Washington, D.C., on October 30. Stewart’s event, the Rally to Restore Sanity, will urge citizens to “take it down a notch for America.” This means, according to the host, attendees are assembling to encourage others to ”stop shouting, throwing and drawing Hitler mustaches on people other than Hitler.” Colbert’s convention, “Keep Fear Alive,” aspires to achieve precisely the opposite. According to PopEater, in a press release about the event, Comedy Central gave its word that the rivaling rallies would “bigger than Nixon/Kennedy, Ali/Foreman, Aniston/Jolie, 50/Nas, Joe/the Volcano, Alien/Predator, Bunny/Fudd and Ecks/Sever combined.” Another question, though, is whether the pow-wow will garner the same turn-out and press coverage as Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin’s Restoring Honor, a summertime Tea Party variety show, which drew crowd of anywhere from 100,00 to a million, depending on who‘s lying to you.
Who's down? I'm thinking about attending and have already gotten emails from friends in Chicago and San Francisco who are flying in.
